For many, this time of the year signifies the days getting shorter, evenings longer, time to light the fire and switch on the heating. The days of evenings in the garden and trips to the beach seem a million miles away. But what if rather than bracing ourselves to struggle through this time of year, we looked to our ancient Celtic heritage for inspiration and guidance?


Rather than seeing time as linear, time was seen as cyclical by the Celts. Eight festivals marked a different stage in the year and were closely connected to the cycles of the natural world. Samhain is an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. While its roots are steeped in tradition, Samhain offers a range of positive impacts on mental health, particularly for those seeking connection and reflection.


One of the most significant benefits of Samhain is its focus on community and togetherness. The festival encourages people to gather, share stories, and honour ancestors, fostering a sense of belonging that is vital for emotional wellbeing. These shared rituals can help alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness, providing an opportunity for meaningful social interaction.


Samhain also invites personal reflection and mindfulness. As the season shifts, people are encouraged to look inward, acknowledging changes and letting go of what no longer serves them.
